Stave and Clef
The Stave
The stave or staff is where music is written down. It is represented by 5 lines. Each line and space represents a note. Which note they represent will be determined by the clef which is placed at the beginning of the stave.
The Clef
A sign or symbol normally placed at the beginning of the stave. The type and position of the clef will determine the pitches of the notes in the stave, therefore different types/positions of clefs are used to cater for different types of instruments.
Treble 'G' Clef
This clef is usually used in the melody or soprano stave because it accomodates the highest pitches compared to other clefs. The clef curves around a line which denotes the 'G' note so it is also called the G Clef
Bass 'F' Clef
The bass clef is mainly used for instruments playing bass parts. The line between the 2 dots denotes the 'F' note so it is also called the F Clef
'C' Clef
The C Clef is the most versatile clef and it used for many instruments. The sharp point at the middle of the clef denotes the middle 'C'. Most common uses of the C Clef :
Tenor Clef
Another way of writing the tenor clef. It's almost the same as the treble clef except for a little '8' under the clef. All the notes are the same pitch as the treble clef except that they are one octave lower than the treble clef, therefore the middle C is in a different position too.
