Elements of Music
Pitch
The relative highness and lowness of a sound determined by the frequency of its vibrations.
A tone is a sound with definite pitch whereas noise has indefinite pitch.
Dynamics
The degrees of loudness or softness in music. Adds spirit and mood to performances.
Tone Color
Quality of the tone. Changes in tone color create variety and contrast.
Rhythm
The flow of music through time. Usually defines the personality of the melody. It is determined by several aspects : beat, meter, accent and syncopation and tempo.
Melody
A series of single tones which add up to a recognizable whole. It has direction, shape and continuity. The character of a melody is determined by the pitches and duration of the notes, as well as how the notes are performed.
Harmony
The way chords are constructed and how they follow each other. Harmony helps give music variety and movement.
Key
Tonality of the music where all other tones of the melody gravitate towards the keynote. This includes the scale and the chords.
Musical Texture
Refers to how many different layers of sound are heard at once, to what kind of layers they are, and how they are related to each other. 3 basic types of textures are: monophonic, polyphonic and homophonic.
Form
The organization of musical elements in time, how various parts of the music are related to each other.
